Monster Idaho Mule deer!
Jim Carr Whacks a Great Idaho Mule Deer My Muzzleloader Buck By Jim Carr My hunt began in late October with the hope of catching deer in their migration and at the beginning of the rut. I started out high in the unit with snow already on the ground trying to see if the migration had started. I covered miles of territory and saw only eight bucks with the best being a 160 typical with a six inch drop tine. In the late afternoon while hiking up a ridge, a storm blew in and visibility reduced to less than 50 yards. It snowed a few inches during ...
First Lite Clothing
FIRST LITE Back to the Basics I feel like, the older I get, the smarter I get. I'm sure you can find people that would tell you I'm not getting any smarter, but what do they know? Most of them are still wearing their old, traditional camo clothing made from cotton, polyester, and even denim. Over the last couple years, I have jumped on the band wagon and have been experimenting with some of these new high performance hunting clothing companies. Let me tell you, there is some great high performance clothing for hunting on the market right now. [caption id="attachment_3410" align="aligncenter" width="590"] ...

Jerry Harbottle is on a roll again!
Jerry Harbottle downs a great Colorado Muzzy buck! Jerry Harbottle is once again in the spotlight! He continues to harvest monsters deer ever year! I asked him what his secret was to killing some of the countries largest mulies every year and he stated " It's my watch. I flash them with the watch and they can't stand it. It drives them crazy and they have to come and check it out". Well I don't don't know what to believe....He keeps smacking the big ones so he is doing something right. Watch or not...He shot this one at 25 yards. I ...

Idaho Fish and Game to kill Thousands of Deer!
Idaho fish and Game commission gave the game department permission to kill thousands of deer on the winter range! Yesterday, the commission approved the killing of 500 doe from the Bennett hills winter range. The two hunts of 275 tags each will start in December and run through the end of the month. This hunt was concocted after a fire tore through the winter range in August of this year. The first proposal was to kill 2000 head. The local and the state biologist feel that the lack of feed will stress the deer into having a poor fawn crop or ...

Once in a lifetime!
2010 Deer Hunt by, Blake Tubbs After hunting for seven days I finally saw the one. It snowed a skiff the night before, which resulted in Jeff and me not getting out of our sleeping bags as early as we should have. We were hiking to our destination and it was already getting light and we still had half a mile to go. As we were heading to our destination, we were moving pretty swiftly and I was pretty irritated at myself for not getting out of bed a half hour earlier. That was until we spooked some deer over ...
LOST AND FOUND
By: Tivon Miller Was I crazy? The anxiety was killing me! What was I doing passing on a 200” deer even on this hunt? However, 3 weeks before while out scouting with my good friend Jason Sandusky, we found the buck I was looking for. This particular buck had been the topic of conversation between me and most of my close friends since I found out of my good fortune of drawing the tag I had put in for, for so long. Over the 4th of July weekend, my wife, kids and I were staying with our friends the Mooseman’s. Brian ...
Baelin Borg finds massive set of sheds!
Well first, Id like to thank my dad, Best hunting partner, or none of this would have been possible. Ok so now the story. Im an avid shed hunter and hunter and I love getting out hiking and looking for sheds. In over 3 weekends My dad and I have picked up about 60 antlers overall. I had just dropped my dad off at spot to walk. I went back to camp to grab a quick bite and then headed out into some great looking wilderness. I hiked up the bluff and on to a mesa, a couple hours into ...

Archery Giant!
Don't know much about this buck, except he is a giant and looks as if he was taken with archery equipment. It even looks as if it took a few arrows! The empty quiver gave that away! The email said that the buck came from Colorado. It's definitely a great buck and congrats to the lucky hunter!
Another couple Idaho Giants!
Idaho Produces! I don't know much about this first deer! The Hunter is supposed to be a gentleman named Bill Lowe and the deer was Harvest here in southern Idaho! What a beast of a deer. His deer is well over 300 lbs on the hoof. Take a look at the size of the body on this deer. This buck looks like he will tape in t over 205 inches. Keeping Hope Alive Joebob Lewis-Idaho-DIY-General hunt-Public land A couple of friends of mine called me up one day in October of 2008. Dennis Owsley had taken a monster non-typical mule deer during the rifle hunt. His buck taped out at a gross score of 217 non-typical. What amazed me the most was the fact that he had taken this buck on public land, and in a general hunt unit. Most bucks of this stature come from Idaho’s premiere draw hunts. Still in disbelief, I had to take a look at his magnificent buck, so they were kind enough to bring it over. ...
Oregon Produces a 221 4/8 Monster
Jerry Harbottle sent me over these pictures and a quick story about his awesome 2010 Oregon buck. Congrats Jerry on a great couple of years. You are defiantly an Antler Junkie! Steve I have hunted Eastern Oregon for mule deer for the past two year with some really good friends of mine. I was fortunate enough this year to harvest this buck on the second day of the hunt. After a 20 minute stalk, we worked our way to within 300 yards of the buck. We belly crawled the last 50 yards cresting the knob and were 300 yards across ...
Hunting for Lefty!
Story by Jason Wright I first located the buck that I nicknamed “Lefty” in mid August. The name came from his incredible left side and his horribly split left ear. Unfortunately I wasn’t the only person watching him that day. Brian, (who I came to know during the course of the hunt) was also laying eyes on Lefty for the first time that day. As I approached him he was bent over a spotting scope taking a closer look. After a long chat, we exchanged phone numbers and promised that we’d contact each other if either one of us were ...
IDAHO HAS BANNER YEAR!
This could possibly be the best year of deer hunting in 20 years! Please don't steal these photos they are copyrighted material! With all the texts and e-mails that I have received in the last 2 months it is looking like the best year in decades for trophy mule deer hunting in Idaho. I have seen and heard of over 20 bucks that gross over 200 inches. I have personally seen 7 that came out of units 44 and 45, two out of 43, one out of 46, and 5 out of the owyhees (Unit 40). Not to mention the rumors of ...
Mossback Smacks Another Monster
Dole Moss and crew harvest the 2010 governors tag in Utah. Doyle is know stranger when it comes to big deer and taking his clients to where they live. Doyle and his crew had watched and filmed this deer for two months before the lucky hunter had a crack at him. This buck is one of a handful that make the Boone and Crockets club minimum for typical and non typical categories. What a monster! Congrats to everyone involved. 241 4/8 gross Utah monster 11 x8
Hunting hard does pay off!
by Brian Richter Found First On The lowlight of day break and excessive distance made his trophy status difficult to judge. Nevertheless, I was certain he was the one. All I needed was for him to lie down and I would make my move. He had been courting a doe since daybreak; but suddenly, and without notice, Romeo left Juliet and disappeared into a nasty basalt canyon. With two miles and multiple rocky canyons between us, he might as well have flown to the moon. A knot grew in my stomach. There are three periods of emotional charge in big game hunting: Anticipation: ...
Tina’s big Idaho Bruin!
CUTEY AND THE BEAST By Bob Mancuso My 13 year old daughter Tina was lucky enough to draw a coveted Idaho controlled bear tag in 2010. This hunt is spot and stalk only, no bait or dogs allowed. Approximately 500 applicants put in for 75 tags and she scored one. She surely has her mother’s luck because her mom has drawn this tag twice and has scored nice bears both times. So having some knowledge of this unit, and knowing that bear numbers would be high, I set the bar pretty high for Tina’s first controlled hunt tag. We live in the country ...
Breeding Stock?
Here is a buck out of old Mexico that is breeding stock on a hunting ranch. The deer is said to be for sale for the fair price of $280,000.00. It was sent over on an e-mail so the truth is not known. I just thought you would enjoy seeing this monster buck. It is a shame he is not a wild deer, but all the same he is a tremendous desert mule deer. From what I can see he looks like a fairly young mule deer at 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. I'm leaning more towards 3 ...
Zach’s latest record buck!
Zach's Latest record book deer. Scoring in 228 net, Zach's buck is the new number two record Pope and Young buck for the state of Idaho. What a great couple of years Zach has had chasing monster mule deer. Zach will be a guest speaker at the Mule Deer University, this weekend at the Sports show here in Boise. A photo of Zach's great buck from August 2009 Zach harvest a second great Pope and Young buck during the 2009 season. His incredible typical buck would have scored close to the 200 inch mark if not for the 6 inches of broken ...
Texas mule deer hunting at its finest
TWO TEXAS MONSTERS Rick Meritt and Donnie Starks harvested two of the largest deer to come out of Texas this year. Rick's Deer gave the state record a run for the money, with a 214 inch typical frame and a gross score of 223 inches, it fell in to second place. If it wasn't for the extra inline this deer would have smashed the state record typical score. 223 not to bad for a four by five. Rick Meritts 223 inch gross Texas monster Donnie's buck is no slouch with a gross score of 203 inches. It ...
Living Colorado Giant
Here is a giant deer that was photographed in Colorado! Looks like a park deer to me. Maybe someone will share some information on this buck with us! Let's not hold out breath.
300 inch muzzy buck out of Oregon
Lucky hunter takes a 300 inch cactus buck in Oregon with his muzzleloader! A friend of mine from Oregon called a said this buck unofficially scores 301 gross. What a pig and congrats to the lucky hunter. It could be the second largest buck ever killed with a muzzleloader. Arnold Sandoval's is the largest that I know of. It was harvested in Nevada. I believe it scored around 304 gross and was 35 inches wide. Arnold Sandoval with his 2006 muzzleloader buck that grossed 304
New issue of Hunting Illustrated
In stores now.......Until January 26,2010 Mule Deer and Front Stuffers By Steve Alderman My heart beat uncontrollably as I saw huge mule deer antlers at fifty six yards. The date was Oct 1st. 8:30 a.m and It was 40 degrees, over cast, with winds gusting up to 35 miles an hour. I had been watching and filming this buck for the past three months and now wasn't the time to mess up all of the hard work I had done. I knew I needed to cover four more yards to get a clean shot, but the buck bedded with his butt into the ...
Ron’s Second Idaho Buck of the Year!
Ron Santucci Bags his second great buck of the year. Not only did Ron draw the Idaho Super Tag this year, but he and his good friend Kevin actual drew unit 40 for the late hunt also. You talk about one lucky guy. Not everybody I know can take a month and a half off of work! Congrats Ron on two great trophies! Ron with his second great buck from Idaho this year scoring 188 gross! Not the widest buck on the hill but the fronts, trash and the mass make up for that. story coming soon....
Heavy 195 goes down!
Bruce Harvey takes an incredible 195 inch mule deer home after hunting for only three days. We had a great last week of hunting with good friends Mike Weeks and Bruce Harvey. Bruce took a great buck on the third day of the hunt while Mike ended his season with a great cull buck on the last day. Bruce Harvey with his great Idaho buck! We watched this buck for three days before he gave us a chance to harvest him. On the second day of the hunt we watched this buck come with in three hundred yards of another hunter. We ...
Christina bags a great 195 inch buck!
A Wife's Joy.........A Husband's Misery By Christina Morrow Why is it that men procrastinate everything to absolute last minute? This is the very question I mutter to Daniel, my husband, every year between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on May 31st. That is usually about the time he remembers that we have to put in for our Idaho Controlled Hunt tags. I guess I shouldn't complain too much about this family tradition as it usually ends in excellent results......at least for me. One year this May 31st late night ritual resulted in a great bull moose tag for me. In 2009, the ritual ...
Jake Shea Scores!
Jake Shea scores on his biggest muzzleloader buck to date. After seven fun filled days of hunting Jake found a buck that was worthy of his tag. IDAHO'S PUBLIC LAND AT ITS BEST! Jakes great muzzleloader buck scores 198 inches. It has great g-2s with one over 20 inches long, a g-3 that is 15 inches long, and main beams that stretch the tape right at 26 inches. On the fourth day of the hunt we woke up to over 10 inches of snow. By the end of the day we had over 14 inches of the white stuff. Story coming soon........
Idaho’s unit 44 produces a 198 inch monster
A Once in a Lifetime Second Chance -Jon Owens My father and I thought 2008 was going to be our monumental year for Mule Deer Hunting. We had each harvested the biggest deer we had ever seen in Colorado and Wyoming. As we were driving back home to Portland, Oregon I called a close friend of mine in Boise to tell him our stories. He proceeded to send me a picture message with a picture of his deer he harvested on his family’s ranch. It was a monster. We met him at a gas station to exchange pictures and right then, dad ...
Idaho State Record Muzzy Buck!
New Idaho State Record Muzzy buck Harvest Dallas Smith is no stranger when it comes to large mule deer. Over the last few years, Dallas has added three awesome mule deer to his collection each scoring over the magical 200 inch mark. However, none of them come close to the accomplishment he achieved this past week. Dallas harvested the pending new # 4 in the world mule deer with a muzzleloader and it is also the new State Record in Idaho. The unfortunate part of this story is that the buck will never be recorded in the books. Dallas has to ...
WASHINGTON’S TOP MULE DEER?
Possible new Pope and Young State record for Washington Muledeercountry.com all photo rights reserved What a great guy! Just got off the phone with the lucky hunter Mark. What a humble person! This is a great story, Mark has watched this deer for three years and was able to draw the tag a stick an arrow in this awesome animal. "It really hasn't even hit me yet. The phone has been ringing off the hook and it hasn't even giving it time the sink in. I wish the deer was still alive and a pet in my back yard. Its hard harvesting ...
Kansas Muzzleloader Mule Deer!
Kansas, Muzzleloading Mule Deer! During the 2003 and 2004 mule deer seasons I was fortunate enough to bag two monster muleys thanks to my friend Matt Beckman and his father Mike who run a guide service in western Kansas. With Matt’s help and generosity, during the 2003 early muzzleloader season, I was able to shoot a 205-inch non-typical mule deer at twenty-two steps while he was bedded down in an uncut milo field. This past season was a little different because I was hunting with my father and my wife during rifle season so ...

Idaho Monster!
Idaho Buck After discussing with my good friend and mule deer hunting companion, Neal Myler, where to apply for mule deer tag, I took his advice and applied for the Eastern Idaho unit he had drawn in 2002. He said it was a great area but had been tough because of very little snow. When the drawing results were out I found, that as usual, I had not drawn my elk tag but was excited to see I did draw a mule deer tag. The area we would be hunting our giant bucks is very dependant on ...
Early, Idaho Rifle hunt!
Early rifle hunt in Idaho It all started when this new taxidermist moved into town and came in the store asking if we needed any work done. After two months of telling him no I finally agreed to take our town’s newest taxidermist, Mike Allemang, with me on my controlled hunt. Also accompanying us was another good friend, Buddy Yeun. I had hunted this unit for the last five years, either with a tag of my own or taking a family member. The biggest buck we had taken scored around 150 B&C. We just ...
IDAHO SUPER TAG
Super Tag by; Mark Drake As I listened to the man on the telephone, my mind was racing. I was reeling with excitement, but at the same time I tried to contain myself, just in case this was some kind of practical joke. I asked myself, “Who did I tell that I had bought those Access Yes lottery tickets and who would now play such a mean joke on me by calling me and telling me that I had just been drawn for a Super Deer Tag?” It had to be my friend Perry Bronson. After finishing my conversation ...
Idaho Mule Deer on a Super Tag
Idaho Mule Deer on a Super Tag! By Dennis Pahlisch As with all hunts they start with obtaining a tag. Well, the year 2007 will go down as the best ever in my hunting quest because I won lottery draw tags for Colorado deer and Idaho Deer. Dennis' awesome buck from Colorado, Haveseted two months after his Idaho Super Tag You may have read about my Colorado story by now, but this one is focused on Idaho. I have a long time friend, Steve Alderman, from Boise , Idaho and Steve and I have gone on many hunts together in Oregon, Old Mexico ...
Krogh and Ulmer hook up Again!
Greg Krogh - Mogollon Rim Outfitters Featured Outfitter Greg Krogh In July of 07 I was heading to Nevada with My wife and family to start scouting for Randy Ulmers archery mule deer hunt. The whole drive over I was preoccupied with the thought of a buck that had eluded us the year before. I had glassed him up during the actual hunt the year before on opening day, but by the time I went and got Randy and made it back to my glassing knob he had disappeared. Feeding right in the same general area was another great buck with a ...
Alberta, New #2 Archery Mule Deer!
Alberta Bliss By Steve Alderman Anyone and everyone in the mule deer world knows that Canada is home to impressive mule deer including the current world record, the Broder buck. Hunting the rolling hills of Alberta for trophy mule deer had been a dream of mine for the last ten years. Harvesting a monster mule deer with a bow is a difficult task because of the mule deer's keen senses. Nonetheless, before I knew it, a mule deer hunting buddy of mine, Joe Wiggs, referred me to an outfitter in Southern Alberta. The date was set and I was headed north to hunt the rolling ...
Super Tag 2007
Idaho Super Tag 2007 By: Ryan Smith Wow, what a season! It all started back in July when my brother Dallas called me at work, I believe that it started something like this “you lucky SOB, your name was drawn for the super tag”. The Super Tag is a tag that the Idaho Fish and Game gives away in a lottery drawing. I couldn’t believe it best $50.00 I have ever spent. After the initial shock wore off, it was time to get down to business. Start scouting and looking for the “WOW” buck.. I decided right off that I ...
Hunting Articles
IS TROPHY HUNTING DRAINING OUR GENE POOL? BY JIM HEFFELFINGER Hunters in the U.S. and Canada are the driving force behind the most amazing system of wildlife conservation ever developed. Because of its resounding success, this North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is now being applied in other countries. Unfortunately, this is a largely untold story as most of the public thinks their government takes care of wildlife using their tax dollars. There is a serious lack of understanding and appreciation for the true history of wildlife conservation. Even after learning about this fantastic story, some cannot reconcile the benefits of ...
SUPER TAG, SUPER GUY!
"SUPER TAG for SUPER GUY" By Steve Alderman Editors note.... I first met Dennis at the Mule Deer Foundations national banquet in Reno Nevada. Dennis and I hit it off from the start. A strong love for the sport of hunting and an extreme desire to pursue monster mule deer. Dennis and I keep in touch after the banquet on a number of occasions, discussing mule deer related issues through out the West from Canada to as far south as old Mexico. What I know and respect about Dennis is that he is a family and Business man first, then ...
“Culling out the Herd”
Culling out the herd! I moved here from Texas in 1997, and have been hunting in the mountains of Idaho for the past 11years. The transition of hunting in box stands, on flat lands, to the rugged country in this awesome state was very BRUTAL in the beginning years. It didn’t take me long to hear of the bucks in the famed Unit 45. After applying for the controlled hunt for 10 consecutive years, my lotto number was finally drawn in 2008. I may not have won millions of dollars, but this hunt was the next best thing! It was a 14 ...
Mexico Monsters
Whats in your pack? Muzzleloading mule deer By Steve Alderman With all of the new technology in our backpacks hunting has gone to a new level. Gone are the days of stalking a deer. Gone are the days of hiking for miles to get to the basin that holds that group of bachelor bucks. Gone are the days when you had to guess how far the deer was and where you needed to aim your gun, which incidentally was only lethal out to 300 yards. Gone are the days when you, the average hunter, had a fair chance to run into the buck of your dreams. Technology has ...
